Knitting Abbreviations
Below are commonly used knitting abbreviations and an explanation of what they mean.

= alternate.
approx
= approximately.
beg
= begin/ning.
CC
= contrast colour.
cm
= centimetres.
cn
= cable needle.
cont
= continue.
dec
= decrease.
foll
= following.
garter st
= knit every row.
inc
= increase/increasing.
incl
= including/inclusive.
ins
= inches.
K
= knit.
MC
= main colour.
M1
= make 1 - pick up loop which lies before the next stitch, place on left-hand needle and knit into back of loop.
P
= purl.
patt
= pattern.
psso
= pass slipped stitch over.
p2sso
= pass the two slipped stitches over.
rem
= remain/ing.
rep
= repeat.
rnd
= round.
RS
= right side.
sl
= slip.
stocking st
= knit one row then purl one row.
st/s
= stitch/es.
tbl
= through back of loop.
tog
= together.
WS
= wrong side.
ybk
= yarn back.
yft
= yarn front.
yfwd
= yarn forward.
yon
= take yarn over top of needle into knitting position, thus making a stitch.
yrn
= take yarn right round needle into purling position, thus making a stitch.

= contrast colour.

= chain.
ch sp/s
= chain space/s.
cm
= centimetres.
cont
= continue.
crab st
= work as for dc but work from left to right so stitches are worked backwards.
dc
= double crochet (in American patterns called single crochet).
dec
= decrease.
dtr
= double treble.
foll
= following.
htr
= half treble.
inc
= increase/increasing.
incl
= including/inclusive.
ins
= inches.
lp/s
= loop/s.
MC
= main colour.
patt
= pattern.
qtr
= quadruple treble.
rem
= remain/ing.
rep
= repeat.
rnd
= round.
RS
= right side.

= single crochet.

= slip.

= slip stitch.
